Chapter 17

Nikki

Nikki doubled over, panting from the effort she’d exerted pushing her way through the crowd. At the end of the table, two men were lifting a swollen-faced DeMarco Davis from his chair as another woman pushed onto the stage. Ross had noticed the way DeMarco was clutching his throat before anyone else seemed to. He’d shouted, cutting off Nikki’s attempt to flirt with him, and then he’d grabbed her forearm, the terror on his face evident as it occurred to him that his daughter was about to eat one of the pies that had made DeMarco sick.

Ross must have transmitted his fear to her through touch. That was the only explanation Nikki could come up with. He’d stumbled forward, but not before Nikki had felt his desperation and horror and compulsion to stop what could happen so viscerally that it had become her own. The next thing she knew, she was pushing people out of her way with a viciousness Ross wasn’t capable of, and she made it to the stage in time to stop Jess from taking a bite from the contaminated second round.

And now, rather than falling to her knees with gratitude like she should’ve been, Jess was looking up at her like Nikki had shot her instead of saved her. Nikki would’ve laughed, but she actually liked DeMarco Davis—he’d dated Lexi for a while, and he’d treated her well, even ending the relationship kindly once he realized she hadn’t been treating him nearly as well—and Nikki couldn’t seem to shake the sight of him clutching his throat, his eyes bulging with fear. Her stomach twisted at the memory.

“You poisoned my pie?” Jess asked, her voice high with surprise.

“Yes,” Nikki snapped, annoyed that she was being accused of attempting to end Jess’s life after her Herculean effort to save it. “One bite and your insides would’ve melted like lava.”

Nikki swiped other pie plates off the table and onto the floor as she spit out the words. It wasn’t until after she was halfway through ridding the table of all of them that she realized the effort was unnecessary. She wasn’t the only person who had made it onto the stage. DeMarco’s mom had gotten to him and had plunged what Nikki assumed was an EpiPen into his outer thigh.

“What the hell is going on?” Bobby demanded, pushing up from his seat and towering over the table.

Bryce lifted his shirt, swiping it over his tongue, and Jess’s eyes darted between her pie on the floor and Nikki’s face like she was still trying to determine if Nikki had put something lethal in it. At the end of the table, the two men were attempting to pull DeMarco to his feet for the second time. To Nikki’s relief, DeMarco stumbled between them, drunkenly but upright, his mom running over to say something to Novak before following after them.

“It looks like you’re going to live to sweat through another sleeveless T-shirt,” Nikki said, turning her attention toward Bobby just long enough to answer his question.
