~Sage~
She knew him. She was under no illusions about who he was. This wasnât like with Seth. It wasnât. And so she allowed herself the freedom to be as lame as she wanted to be and to go back to the way it was.
Her heart could deal. Life with him was worth it. It was.
âI was wrong to tell you that I canât keep being just a friend to you anymore because Iâd rather have you as that than not have you at all.â She sighed. âI know itâs hard for you to trust anyone, but ââ
âBut I trust you,â he said, touching his lips to hers.
A simple kiss. Rachel was stunned for a moment by the tenderness of it⦠but she quickly moved closer, reasoning with herself that if this was the one kiss sheâd get from him ever, sheâd make it worth a whole lifetime. Even as she pulled him closer, her hands in his hair, very nearly clenched against all that she was feeling, thinking on how much this memory would hurt later, she broke away from him.
All of her pleas to herself about remaining sane went flying out the window. She couldnât be just his friend! Who was she kidding? She needed this, Micahâs lips on hers, all the time. And if she couldnât have it⦠could she really have him in her life?
Who knew? And it was so hard to concentrate as he continued placing slow, soft kisses on her lips, his arms wrapped around her, murmuring her name as she made no move to leave him.
Wait a minute. He was still kissing her! But how could that be, when they were just friends, and â
âDonât play games with me, Micah,â she murmured sadly, her forehead to his, even as she fought against the need to kiss him again. It was a plea to him, to herself⦠she couldnât take this. âPleaseâ¦â
âI wonât⦠trust me,â he whispered.
âI canât lose you,â she whispered back, tears in her eyes.
âYou wonât,â he murmured against her lips. âAnd Iâm willing to risk everything. I trust you⦠because youâre the best friend Iâve ever had.â He swallowed and watched her. âI love you. And Iâm yours, Rachel. Just yours. If you want me.â
She watched him, doubting these wonderful, amazing words⦠then finally believing them because they came from him, finally believing them because he, too, was the best friend sheâd ever had.
And she couldnât stop the small cry that escaped from her mouth, as her tears finally came, as she smiled and leaned forward to return his kisses.
She pulled back a moment later, wrapped her arms around him, and whispered, âI do, Micah. I want you. Forever.â
Sage put down her ereader and gave a small gasp. Not because of the content of the book she was reading (which was over the top sappy, just exactly what she loved) but because of the pain. The excruciating, surprising pain. Even that small movement - just putting down her ereader - was painful.
She was sore.
