Chapter Six

Sophia fiddled with her silverware, anxious to go back to the room and find something dry to put on but much more worried about Carson. She’d expected him to return within a short time. She’d sat at the table while the other guests gobbled big bowls of something called stew fish, which featured whatever fresh seafood the kitchen had at hand prepared with tomatoes, onions, celery and a variety of spices. It smelled decent, but her throat was too tight to admit anything more than sips of water.

The hotel had also opened the bar, and many guests took advantage of the special “hurricane pricing” offered to get plastered. How could they be so irresponsible in an emergency situation like this? Not that it didn’t sound appealing. But, unlike the rest, wind and rain were not her only problems. Someone had progressed from causing accidents to her lovers to killing her friends and had, apparently, decided to stop torturing her and murder her outright. At least the storm provided some measure of safety, keeping her in full sight of so many others—the killer would be a fool to try anything.

Everyone shouted to be heard over the storm, and the clinking of silverware against the soup bowls added to the noise. Her ears rang with it, and she suddenly couldn’t take it any longer. Shoving to her feet, she headed for the bathroom. Off a central hallway and windowless, it might offer a little bit of peace. Once the door closed behind her, the noise died down. Not entirely gone, but so much better, her eyes teared in relief. The crying desk clerk must have left at some point because nobody else was there. Slipping into a stall, she flipped the toilet lid down and sat. The wind rattled the vent and howled in the distance, but the voices, the shouting, the drunken carousing no longer tormented her.

Somewhere out in the storm, Carson pursued a lead, a clue. Maybe the actual shooter who had attempted to kill them and had succeeded in killing Scotty. In the whirl of activity, she’d almost put him out of her mind, but now he loomed again.

As a misfit herself, she’d been happy to befriend him a few years before. Her job as a Russian translator, along with a few other Slavic languages, had taken her to an event where his father was campaigning and, after her client hooked up with another guest—in a way that required no interpreter—she’d retired to the back of the room where the Senator’s son languished, thoroughly uncomfortable with the gathering.

They’d been fast friends ever since.

She’d been with him at the bar where she met Carson, in fact, enjoying an evening of dancing. Scotty loved to dance, and he was so much better at it than she was, but he never seemed to mind her crushing his toes a little. And when his father pressured him to appear in public with a girlfriend, she’d been the natural choice.

But his father knew the truth.
