Bill’s Confusion

Bill went into the foyer that afternoon while Allison was sleeping with the intention of getting their coats and leaving for the picnic the moment Allison got up from her nap.

Mary came from the kitchen with Alma on her heels just as he entered the foyer.

“Mary, Alma, will one of you retrieve the basket from the refrigerator? Do you think the food is still good?”

Alma laughed. “I took care of you, Mr. Andrews. You don’t have to worry. You won’t be getting sick from my food anytime soon.”

“Well, you know, there’s a possibility I might get sick from something else.”

“You won’t get sick. You are a very healthy man.” It was Mary who said that, smiling at him. It was a different smile than he’d seen before, making him feel a little confused. He nodded at her.

“Thank you. I am very healthy, aren’t I?” He puffed out his chest and looked proud. The women both giggled, Mary lifting one hand to put over her mouth.

“Where is Casper?” he asked.

“He went to the bathroom. He’ll be right back, I’m sure.”

All three of them glanced toward the bathroom at the end of the hallway. Then they looked at each other again. Mary moved around Alma to go down the hallway.

“I’ll check on him.”

“I’m sure he’s fine,” Alma said but Mary continued, reaching the door of the bathroom just when it opened.

“There’s my boy!” Mary exclaimed, enthusiastically. Casper looked up at her, surprise on his face. He came out and looked down the hallway toward his father.

“I’m okay. I know how to go to the bathroom all by myself.”

“I know you do. We just wanted to make sure everything was all right.”

Casper moved past her and she followed him as he darted down the hall into the foyer to where his father was.

Bill watched the scene, feeling more confused by the moment. Mary was acting very strange. She was overly excited about the simple scenario. He waited until she was back with them, hoping she would tell him what was going on with her.

When Casper reached him, he put his arms around Bill’s waist. “Papa, I can’t wait to go today. It’s going to be so much fun.”

“I have something exciting I want to tell you,” Mary said, coming up to the two of them. Alma had turned back to the door of the kitchen, shaking her head.

Bill wondered what was going on in his house. Alma was shaking her head for some reason that he couldn’t fathom. Mary was overly excited. Allison was asleep upstairs, having exhausted herself from exploring the library earlier in the day.

He decided he would never understand women. He was glad he knew something was up with Mary before she said something. It made him feel like maybe he was learning how to figure women out. Usually, he was completely confused by them.

That’s how he felt at that moment. “So what is it, Mary? You are obviously very happy about it, whatever it is.”

“Oh, it’s something so adventurous and exciting.
