With work, and two over-excited nieces to contend with, Shona had a couple of days to get over that day and night sheâd spent in Alasdairâs company. The kissing and the rush of blood in her veins every time he touched her began to lose some of its potency when she imagined herself sitting wide awake in bed wondering if heâd come home safely from that call-out. Sheâd seen him from a distance the next day, so she could stop worrying about him on that occasion, but she knew it would become an ongoing concern if she didnât back away now. The last thing she needed was to fall for someone and lose them again. Sheâd been through that too many times to sacrifice the peace of her single life now.
Today, however, was going to be a major test.
âAre you ready to go?â Alasdair came to meet her on the jetty, climbing out of the boat she was supposed to join him on. Heâd borrowed it from one of his crewmates to transport them to the mainland, so they werenât tied to the infrequent timetable of the ferry. To say she was anxious about the journey on such a small vessel would have been an understatement. This was the first time sheâd set foot on a fishing boat since her fatherâs accident, convinced the same fate might befall her and whoever else was on board. It showed her trust in Alasdairâs abilities that sheâd agreed to this at all. Especially with only the two of them travelling. They werenât ideal conditions for maintaining a distance from the man who was never far from her thoughts.
âI wouldnât say ready. Resigned, perhaps. Iâm a little unclear about what weâre supposed to be doing when we get there.â The vague instructions, once theyâd agreed on a day they could both take off, had merely been to bring her elf costume to change into later.
âWeâre the promotions team. Weâre whipping up interest so Braelin gets the visitors to the Winter Wonderland. Thereâs always an ad in the paper, and the requisite social media blitz, but thereâs nothing like having Santa and his elf handing out leaflets in the centre of Glasgow.â
âIâm sure weâll make quite the spectacle,â she said as he took her hand and helped her inside the boat.
âThereâs a lifejacket for you to put on in case of an emergency.â
She snapped her head up at that one. The sea wasnât somewhere she was ever happy to be and this was setting off alarm bells as well as unsettling her stomach. âWhy would I need a lifejacket? You do know how to steer this thing, donât you?â
âItâs just a precaution, thatâs all. Iâve had plenty of practice sailing boats, donât worry.â He reached under the seat and handed her a fetching bright orange life preserver. âI can help you put it on if you need a hand.â
âI think I can manage, thank you.â Even the thought of him tying the straps
