With work, and two over-excited nieces to contend with, Shona had a couple of days to get over that day and night she’d spent in Alasdair’s company. The kissing and the rush of blood in her veins every time he touched her began to lose some of its potency when she imagined herself sitting wide awake in bed wondering if he’d come home safely from that call-out. She’d seen him from a distance the next day, so she could stop worrying about him on that occasion, but she knew it would become an ongoing concern if she didn’t back away now. The last thing she needed was to fall for someone and lose them again. She’d been through that too many times to sacrifice the peace of her single life now.

Today, however, was going to be a major test.

‘Are you ready to go?’ Alasdair came to meet her on the jetty, climbing out of the boat she was supposed to join him on. He’d borrowed it from one of his crewmates to transport them to the mainland, so they weren’t tied to the infrequent timetable of the ferry. To say she was anxious about the journey on such a small vessel would have been an understatement. This was the first time she’d set foot on a fishing boat since her father’s accident, convinced the same fate might befall her and whoever else was on board. It showed her trust in Alasdair’s abilities that she’d agreed to this at all. Especially with only the two of them travelling. They weren’t ideal conditions for maintaining a distance from the man who was never far from her thoughts.

‘I wouldn’t say ready. Resigned, perhaps. I’m a little unclear about what we’re supposed to be doing when we get there.’ The vague instructions, once they’d agreed on a day they could both take off, had merely been to bring her elf costume to change into later.

‘We’re the promotions team. We’re whipping up interest so Braelin gets the visitors to the Winter Wonderland. There’s always an ad in the paper, and the requisite social media blitz, but there’s nothing like having Santa and his elf handing out leaflets in the centre of Glasgow.’

‘I’m sure we’ll make quite the spectacle,’ she said as he took her hand and helped her inside the boat.

‘There’s a lifejacket for you to put on in case of an emergency.’

She snapped her head up at that one. The sea wasn’t somewhere she was ever happy to be and this was setting off alarm bells as well as unsettling her stomach. ‘Why would I need a lifejacket? You do know how to steer this thing, don’t you?’

‘It’s just a precaution, that’s all. I’ve had plenty of practice sailing boats, don’t worry.’ He reached under the seat and handed her a fetching bright orange life preserver. ‘I can help you put it on if you need a hand.’

‘I think I can manage, thank you.’ Even the thought of him tying the straps
