Chapter Ten

That evening in the nurses’ sitting room she talked to Lydia Haines, the newly qualified nurse who had cared for Evadne in that bodged-up little room allotted to her. She was a great admirer of Hugh, and said so. It was she who had told all sorts of stories about him, of his brilliance and his unending fight with death itself.

‘He never has girl friends,’ she said, ‘No time for them.’

But Lucy was recalling that afternoon by the side of the seawall, with the tide turning. Then she had thought that it was the real thing, the big emotion, and he had kissed her. Now he had spoken to her, then had gone off again, without looking back.

She remembered others telling her that women were born to suffer, and always would suffer more than men could do. She was remembering this keenly now. Men flirt; then have love affairs and forget all about them. It is the unhappiness of all women that they have to remember, whereas men can always forget. She felt this thought vibrating through her, a sorrow which she saw as a scar and a big one, something that she could not push away from her, and close her heart to it.

It happened to be a sticky time in Bethany.

They had two deaths that very evening. Fond as she was of some of these poor old things, Lucy was always thankful when the end came peacefully. Then they had an accident with one lively old lady, who watched her opportunity, until the unbelievable moment when there was no nurse actually in the ward itself, and then sprang out of the bed, and made for the door with the idea of escaping.

Of course she had never realized that, for some time now, she had been paralysed and her legs would not work for her. They could not obey the instructions of her heart, so she collapsed breaking a leg then and there, and was found by Lucy, who gathered her up in her arms.

‘You poor, poor thing,’ she whispered fondly. ‘You are not well enough to leave us yet, you know. One day you will go. We’ll get you well enough for that and that is a promise.’

They put things right, and got her back into bed. The leg set comfortably, without her knowing that it had even happened, but of course this had been the glorious chance for Sister Knox to let fly. Someone should have been there and on duty!’

Had she not always warned the young nurses never to leave the patients entirely alone, unattended, and what was the good of her giving constant directions if nobody had the good sense to obey them ‒? She reported it to Matron, with her own notes attached to it. It was the third irritable report that she had sent in within the last few days, and the chatterbox student nurse remarked on this.

‘She’ll be giving herself a bad name, if you ask me, and one of these days she will be transferred somewhere else, and shall I be enchanted?’ she said.
