Peace of mind is not that easy to come by. Harriet and Ozzie may have it, but most others don’t. It doesn’t matter whether you’re rich, somewhat rich, or not rich at all: the Number game is complicated, the choices are overwhelming, and it is stressful for nearly everyone. You may be good with figures and recognize a standard deviation when you see one, or you may be unschooled, unconfident, and unprepared regarding anything affixed to a dollar sign. Either way, it’s hard to imagine anybody who doesn’t need at least a receptive ear, a shoulder to cry on, or just a tough-love smack upside the head.
There’s a giant and unruly industry out there ready to provide you with support and counsel. While this country may have a shortage of nurses, special ed teachers, and tool and die makers, it certainly does not lack for asset managers, financial advisers, accountants, insurance agents, securities brokers, bankers, and trust officers, all eager to make your acquaintance, impress you with their wisdom, and grab their share of the market. Most advisers present themselves honestly and forth-rightly; some are a little funky and strange.
Today the financial services business finds itself swimming in an alphabet soup consisting of dozens of designations that seem to promise ethical service, candor, trust, rigorous training, competence, experience, and peace of mind. Here are but a few of the titles—some American, some Canadian, some both—that might turn up on the business card of somebody pitching for your business:
