Tack left his dadâs office and took a minute to curse at the plant standing against the wall in the hallway. All of their scouts couldnât find a trace of Ailig and his pirates. King Ren was, understandably, upset. He was demanding answers that Nerio and Tack couldnât give him.
The man had tried to kill Kit. Of all the trouble he had caused, that was something Tack couldnât overlook.
He shook himself and started toward his rooms. It was almost dinner time, and he had a great need to see his mate.
Tack nodded to the two guards stationed at their door, then went inside. The sight of Kit in the kitchen wasnât that unusual, but Pearl and Chichi hadnât met him at the door.
âIs Pearl napping?â he asked quietly, looking toward his room.
âNope. Her and Chichi are staying the night with Jamie and Beth at Anaâs house.â
Tack didnât know how he felt about that. On the one hand, he trusted Anabelle completely, but on the other hand, Pearl was his baby girl. He wanted her right beside him all the time.
Kit gave him a sympathetic look. âI know how you feel. Iâm happy she has friends now, but this is hard.â
Tack sat on a stool at the bar and propped his arms in front of him. âWhat are you doing?â
Kit grinned and swayed to the music playing from the wireless speaker hanging in the corner of the room. âIâm making dinner â lobster tail with garlic butter, broccoli, and roasted green beans. Esme made us cranachan for dessert.â
Tack smiled wide. âYouâre still enjoying your cooking lessons?â
âYes.â Kit pumped an arm in the air and shook his butt, looking remarkably like Pearl.
Tack had noticed the longer Kit stayed with them, the more carefree he acted. He liked dancing around the room and teased everyone, regardless of class or species. Tack had even caught Kit and Leona pranking Laird Sutton the previous week.
The normally dour and uptight laird had laughed hard at the sight of the gummy worm curled up on his morning apple. The man had told Kit and Leona that they clearly needed lessons on pranking, and the three had promptly started plotting something.
âHow did the meeting with Nerio go?â Kit asked as he pulled something from the oven.
Tack winced. âNot good. We still havenât found Ailig and the pirates.â
âKai said Father is getting impatient.â Kit lit the candle in the middle of the table in the breakfast nook.
Tack looked around the room and noticed candles and flowers everywhere. Odd.
âKai and Talia have a plan, but they wonât tell me what it is.â Kit dished up their plates and set them on the table. âIâd be angrier, but they arenât telling Father either. Did you get the picture Eloise sent us all?â
Eloise and Namiâs daughter, Jade, had been born a few weeks ago, and Eloise had been sending pictures to everyone every five minutes.
âHow did she even get my number?â Tack scowled. âShe asked me if my merform has two penises and I explained theyâre called claspers, not penises.
