The picture that Chloe sent me of how I’m supposed to be shaving was such an odd close up that I still don’t know what our costumes are going to be, but I got the job done. I was told that everything would be provided. Part of me wants to be annoyed that I wasn’t part of the costume voting committee. But a much larger part loves that she’s so invested in the whole thing that she wants it to be a surprise.

That and you’d put on a banana suit and traipse around Main Street if she asked.

After showering and shaving, I head over to her apartment to get ready. We have an hour before the Halloween Bash starts, but I guess my costume won’t take too much time to throw on.

I decide to walk over since we’ll likely be drinking at the party, and I don’t want to deal with leaving my car somewhere and worrying about it after. The brisk fall air fills my lungs as I speed walk the five blocks from my place to Chloe’s. My heavy flannel jacket keeps me mostly warm, but by the time I make it to her apartment, the tip of my nose feels like an icicle.

I relish the warmth as I take the stairs in her building two at a time. Not wanting to be caught overthinking outside of her apartment again, I knock on her door twice.

Her voice sounds garbled through the door, but I can just make out her response. “Come in!”

Grabbing the doorknob, I turn it to the right and let myself into her home. The moment I step inside, my entire body floods with awareness. The last time I was here, she was coming on my tongue.

And then we spent real quality time together. And it was great. I’m still not sure what any of it meant, but I want to find out. Maybe we can sit down and have a conversation after tonight. Vanessa left, so nothing’s technically keeping us together, or fake together, but Chloe still wants to go as a couple tonight.

That must mean something.

Do I want it to mean something?

I do. I think so at least. I like having her back in my life, and I like the way she makes me feel, and I hope I make her feel just as good. That’s all I know for sure right now.

“Hey, you gotta get dressed, Mr. Addams.” Chloe’s voice distracts me from my thoughts, but then she walks out from the back hallway and takes all of my breath away.

Really, I choke a little on nothing and end up coughing into the crook of my elbow. After a minute, I can finally breathe again and wipe the tears that have escaped my eyes.

I look up again but try to temper my reaction the second time around. Chloe’s staring at me like I just showed up to her apartment wearing an alien costume with half a dozen eyeballs sticking off my face.

She’s dressed head to toe in black.
