NYC: WHITNEY MUSEUM OF AMERICAN ART

99 Gansevoort Street, New York, NY 10014

Designed by Pritzker Prize–winning architect Renzo Piano, the Whitney Museum’s 2015 building looms over the Hudson River in the ever-hip Meatpacking neighborhood, providing breathtaking views of Manhattan, the Statue of Liberty, and New Jersey. Heiress, philanthropist, and artist Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney offered her impressive collection to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1929, but the Met declined, stating it did not show American artworks. That sparked Whitney to establish her own museum dedicated to American art. The collection now features gems spanning the entire history of American art.
