embraced as an adult, the one he liked most was the idea of women being subservient to men. Rebecca Dalton certainly did not subscribe to this notion. Miguel would have made another grab at her, would have loved to teach her the proper place of women, even if it meant knocking a few of those perfect teeth down her slender throat. But she was a close associate of Santa Anna, who was about to bring revolution to the southwest and who had recently donated a substantial amount of money to MOLAP. And so, with money in his pocket and revolution on his lips, Miguel Pagaza swallowed his Latino pride and accepted the orders of General Santa Anna’s woman.

Thus, an hour later, Miguel found himself trudging up the stairs of the Exchange Insurance Company Building, high-powered rifle wrapped in a blue plastic tarp.

The roof door was open, just as she had said it would be. As he settled into position, he noted the other MOLAP men on other roofs, including the two Ejercito de los Pobres killers. No matter what Rebecca Dalton said, these men were not soft murderers of innocents. They had accepted the rifles as if they were born to carry them, and had offered instructions to those like Miguel who were not so proficient with weapons. The two wore death on their hard faces.

A crowd was already in the square. As the hot sun rose higher in the sky, Miguel watched more people flood into the streets. The cheering when Santa Anna stepped out onto the platform from behind a long curtain was deafening.

Miguel wished he could see the general close up. When the bodies of the murdered Civilian Border Patrol members had appeared with graffiti hailing Santa Anna, Miguel still thought the man might be mythical. He had only heard rumors of him until that morning, and then had only seen him give his speech in Los Angeles on television.
