There may have been a time when Muslims idealized the West. The last great leader of any Muslim society to believe in the West with great fervor was probably Kemal Ataturk. He created a secular state that tried to emulate the West and strived to join Western civilization. Eighty-three years after he assumed power in 1923, Turkey is still knocking on the doors of Europe in an effort to be admitted as a member of the European Union. In theory Turkey is eligible to enter, but in practice it is not likely to happen. Turkey’s exclusion from Europe shows the great civilizational divide between the West and Islam, even though Turkey has tried to demonstrate for several decades that (in J. M. Roberts’s memorable phrase) “perhaps they are Westerners now.”
