There are three questions you can ask yourself to assess the impact of performance on your career:

Is performance emphasized where you work?

Which performance measures will you use?

How will you claim your results?

If you can get crystal clear in all three areas, you will be doing everything possible to make your good work count.

Let’s take these one at a time.

Is Performance Emphasized Where You Work?

Pam Nicholson was the president and CEO of Enterprise. As she worked her way from management trainee up through the ranks—including positions as manager, regional vice president, and eventually president and CEO—she did it with her results.

At Enterprise, we emphasize performance. We promote from within and only on performance. So even though the company was young and regional when I joined it, it looked like I would have opportunities in the future.

She confessed that she wasn’t necessarily the type to brag about herself all the time, “so it was good to be in a place where performance would stand for itself.” She said, “The beauty of my company is we measure everything. As long you can put your results on the table, the numbers will speak for themselves.”

Your job is to know what those numbers are for you, and measure them.
