It was only when they reached Eastern Avenue that their luck finally changed.

Despite his obvious restrictions, Eddie threw himself forward and smashed his fist on the dashboard. ‘Stop!’

Lucas reacted instinctively. Slammed on the brakes. ‘You’re not going to be sick, are you? Have you had too much of that sloppy green slime?’

‘What? No … I hope not.’ Eddie pointed out the window, the focus of his attention the last in a row of new builds. ‘That was Benji,’ he cried. ‘I’m sure of it. He just entered the house with another lad. Ah, I can’t remember his name … not his real name … his nickname. It made him sound like a shit barber.’

Lucas got there first. ‘Cutz?’

‘Yeah, Cutz,’ said Eddie, surprised. ‘How did you know?’

‘We’ve met before.’

Eddie turned his nose up in disgust. ‘He’s nothing much. Just a wannabe gangster. I don’t think he’d last a minute in a ring with you,’ he added, nodding at Mercy.

‘It’s funny you should say that …’ began Lucas.

‘Leave it,’ said Mercy, cutting him off. ‘Right, what do we do now? We can’t just knock on the door and introduce ourselves. Not with Cutz in there … where are you going?’

‘Me?’ Eddie was already halfway out the door. ‘I’m done. I told you I’d help you find Benji and I have. Now I’ve got to get back to Nimble. He’ll blow his top if I leave it any longer. The best don’t rest, remember.’

‘Do you want a lift?’ offered Mercy. ‘It’s the least we can do.’

‘Nah, you’re alright. I’ll run,’ grinned Eddie. ‘Build up my stamina for our re-match. Besides, now you’ve found Benji you’d better not lose him.’

With that, Eddie closed the door behind him before jogging back the way they had come. He turned once and waved. Mercy returned the gesture. He was a nice guy. Joining Come Fight With Me boxing club might not be such a bad option if she had to stay in Stainmouth any longer than expected. She wouldn’t mind lending a hand if asked. Teaching them a few tricks of the trade.

When she turned back to Lucas, he was flicking through his contact list. ‘Who are you calling?’

‘Dumb and dumber,’ he replied, pressing the phone to his ear. ‘Also known as the other two.’
