All day it has rained. It has turned cold again. Here, one cannot depend on warm days. I let Charles spend the day with me in front of the fireplace while I sent Mademoiselle Albright off to order him new clothes. He is growing so much. It was such a relief not having her around.

We had a lovely time. I read him books. Played little games. He curled into my lap and listened to every word I said. I showered him with kisses and cuddles. I want him to forget the hag entirely. Not once did I ask him what they had talked about. Children are like animals. They respond to kindness and not indulgences like hot chocolate and a new boat.

When Mademoiselle Albright returned to put him to bed, he put his arms around me and whispered into my ear: ‘I love only you.’

I rewarded him with more kisses and hugs.

Missing François, I had a lonely evening and went to bed early.

To be haunted by the living is terrible. To calm myself into sleep, I thought up ways to kill Anne-Beatrice: hire an assassin, bribe her cook to poison her, infect her with smallpox. If Patulous were still alive, she’d concoct a potion and Anne-Beatrice would die horribly. I wouldn’t care one jot. François would be relieved. I am a savage at heart. She saw that in me. I hate her more for this. François loves my savagery.

Why is he so late? I could scream!
