Apply baking soda (bicarbonate of soda) to the skin

Baking soda (bicarbonate of soda) dissolved in water has an alkaline pH of 8.3 and can ease the itching, discomfort and inflammation of certain skin conditions. Two ways of applying it are making it into a paste or adding it to a bath.

Baking soda (bicarbonate of soda) paste

Put 1 tablespoon of baking soda (bicarbonate of soda) into a small bowl and stir in about 1 teaspoon of water. Apply a thin layer of the paste to the skin. Let the paste dry on the skin, then leave it on for 30 minutes before rinsing it off with water.

Alkaline bath

Add 100–200g/3½–7oz/½–1 cup of baking soda (bicarbonate of soda) to a bath of comfortably hot water. Add a few drops of lavender or other essential oil for fragrance.

TESTING URINE PH

Unusually acidic urine suggests that the kidneys are eliminating excess acid. The most common reason for this is an acid-forming diet.

The pH of normal urine ranges from 4.6 to 8.0. It’s more acidic in the morning than in the evening. If you test your urine, it’s best to test ’24-hour’ urine (all the urine passed in 24 hours and pooled in one container, or cupfuls collected each time you urinate and pooled in one container). Urine pH test strips are available from pharmacies or on the internet.
