The Museum’s Kawanishi N1K2-J Shinden “George,” a land-based descendant of the “Rex” floatplane fighter, was restored in the markings of the 343rd Kokutai, a unit stationed at Omura Naval Air Station in 1945.

The Kawanishi N1K2-J Shinden had two 20 mm cannons in each wing.

On December 27, 1942, a new land-based fighter for the Imperial Japanese navy first took flight. The Kawanishi N1K2-J Shiden “George” was a highly maneuverable fighter with an excellent climbing ability, and a good top speed in excess of 370 miles per hour. It was essentially a Rex with wheels and a new, more powerful 2,000-horsepower Nakajima Homare radial that turned a large four-bladed propeller. Almost as maneuverable as the Zero because of its automatically-controlled combat flaps, the George was more than a match for the Grumman Hellcat when flown by an experienced pilot and it became a highly respected opponent when first met over The Philippines.
