SCENE TEN

In the Studio

Jennifer and Neil are mid duet-recording.

Neil: (narrating)

I sauntered out of the ocean, my board tucked under my arm and paused to shake the water from the salty strands of my sun-streaked hair. I spotted Quinn again, this time without her lace cover-up. A goddess in that white bikini, she was lounging casually under her striped umbrella, her pedicured toes nudging themselves seductively in the sand. As I approached her, she rose to stand.

Jennifer: “Those were some moves you were sporting out there this morning, sir,”

Neil: She said as she shashayed – ash she shashayed – ash she shash – damnit! (quick beat) As. She. Sa-shayed. Boom. Nailed it. I’ll put that together in post, K? I just can’t bear to do it again. I mean how many damn times can an author use the word sashay in one book?

Jennifer: It’s fine, just keep going.

The sound of the door code.

Atticus enters the studio, unseen.

Neil: (narrating)

…closer to me. So close I could smell the sunscreen and sweat that speckled her freckled shoulders. When I put my board in the water this morning, I had no idea it would lead me to this. To her. This bronze beauty standing in front of me who was wet in more ways than one.

Jennifer: “I’m wet in more ways than one,”

Neil: She said, her voice husky with desire. I looked down at my now tented board shorts. “Well that’s excellent timing, Quinn, because…” I looked back up at her and whispered the last part, “Surf’s up, dude.”

Silence.

Jennifer: And Chapter One is done! Woohoo! Neil! Shashaying ashide, that was so good! So so good!

Neil: Yeah! Not bad, huh? I could get used to this side of things!

Atticus taps on the booth window, startling them both.

Neil and Jennifer: (startled)

Ahhh!

Atticus: What the hell is this?

Jennifer: Atticus! Hey! (quick beat) Sorry, what? Can’t hear you. Let me open the –

She opens the booth door.

She is beaming.

Jennifer: Hey!

Atticus: You look happy.

Jennifer: ‘Course I’m happy. I’m recording. Aren’t I always happy when I’m recording?

Atticus: Not this happy.

Jennifer: Oh. Huh. Anyway, what are you doing here?

Atticus: Hang Eleven. Hannah Carlisle duet. Day One.

Beat.

Jennifer: Buddy, I recast it.

Atticus: What?

Jennifer: I recast it. Remember when you tried to high-ball me on your rate and I said “I’m recasting it?”

Atticus: How high or low my balls are is none of your concern. And sure, you said you were recasting, but I didn’t believe you’d actually do it.

Jennifer: Well I did.

Atticus: With whom?

Jennifer: Atticus…

Atticus: WITH WHOM.

Jennifer: Fairfax Johnson!

Atticus: Fairfax who?

Neil: Johnson.

Atticus: Who is that?

Neil: …you’re looking at him.

Beat.

Atticus: You replaced me with the engineer?!

Neil: Oooh hey now! We work together for nearly a decade, and suddenly I’m “The Engineer?”

Atticus: Well you’re certainly not a narrator!

Jennifer: Easy, Atticus. He’s really good.

Atticus: Prove it.

Neil presses play and we hear the last few sentences they just recorded.

Neil: (recording)

When I put my board in the water this morning, I had no idea it would lead me to this. To her. This bronze beauty standing in front of me who was wet in more ways than one.
