But this was like torture to Hailey. She felt like she was in school all over again, and the whole point of being a Mythic was that she got a forever pass to skip school. She just wanted to go adventuring!

At long last, Kit and Marina stopped talking, and Hailey realized she didn’t hear or remember anything they said. But it was okay. She could do this alone. After all, how hard was it to collect berries?

They split up to accomplish the task, and at once, Hailey happened upon a bush with goldish-yellow berries. Wait, what did Kit say about the yellow ones again? There was some sort of cutesy rhyme that Hailey struggled to pay attention to. When a berry is yellow, eat it, good fellow? When a berry is gold, it’s good to be bold? Something like that.

Well, it looked round and delicious, anyway. Her stomach growled in approval. She was beyond hungry.

She sniffed it. It didn’t smell poisonous. Not that she knew what poison smelled like.

She licked it. It didn’t taste poisonous. Not that she knew what poison tasted like.

After a minute of not dropping dead, she decided she was good to go. She plucked a whole bunch of berries off the bush and stuffed them straight into her cheeks.

The yellow berries were delicious. An explosion of flavor in her mouth. She ate her fill.

Once her hunger had subsided, Hailey crammed more into her vest pockets. Then she walked back to the meeting spot, eager to share her find with Marina and Kit. Just wait until they taste these, Hailey thought as she scratched her neck.

She needed another taste. Her tongue was feeling a little funny, probably from how much she ate after a whole day of barely eating anything. She popped a few more berries in her mouth.

Kit and Marina emerged from opposite sides of the forest. Kit held a whole bunch of nuts and crimson berries in her shirt. Marina was holding Kraken, and Kraken had blue-colored berries wrapped in each of her eight arms.

“Look what I found!” Hailey said, holding one of the yellow berries between her teeth. She scratched her face. “Cool, right? They’re super tasty!”

“Hailey!” Marina cried. “Those are the poison ones!”
