“What are you doing?” Marina said.

“We think the hole is over here! We followed the current, but . . .” Pippa wiped off her glasses, which were dripping wet. “I can’t see under there.”

Marina was just about to ask whether her glasses were getting in the way when Kit’s voice echoed down from the deck above. “Um . . . Marina? We’ve got a problem!”

“Another one?!”

“The mystery boat from earlier—it’s back!”

There were too many problems . . . Marina couldn’t handle them all! Her heart pounded, and her breath raced. They had five minutes left, if that. She looked at the arrow on her palm. If ever there was a time for a Mythie to save them . . .

But a Mythie didn’t come.

Marina was at the helm. She had to save herself.

Think . . . Think . . .

At last, Ember came up for air. She spluttered and coughed up water. “It’s pitch-black! How are we supposed to see anything down there?”

The lights flashed again. If only the light would stay on. What they needed was . . .

“Light!” Marina said, turning to Hailey. A sudden, mad burst of inspiration flooded her. “You took the flashlight from the supply closet!”

“Oh, have you come to Hailey’s cabinet of curios?” Hailey said, opening her vest and revealing all sorts of objects in her inner pockets. “This is what you seek!” She turned the flashlight on, then brandished it like a sword. “Unless you’d like the socks?”

“No socks!” Marina said.

“Just checking!”

“Marina!” Kit cried from above. “It’s following us!”

Marina took a deep breath. One job at a time, one problem at a time. They could find the hole, but they still had nothing to plug it with. “Pippa,” Marina said, her voice rising as rapidly as the water. “I bet you were paying attention to the items in each room. Go find something to stuff the hole with! And no socks!”

Pippa nodded and disappeared.
