Thinking

Let’s back up and be a little more general about the thinking that surrounds beliefs. Remember there are two categories: truth and not-truth. There are specific truths that are taught in the Bible and additional truths that are connected to creation and this current age. A truth for this current age is the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. Now, I know this has to do with the rotation of the earth and not the movement of the sun.

However, for the point of this illustration, we operate daily on the truth of sunrise and sunset. We operate on the reliability of the truth of gravity. We have many mathematical equations that we depend upon in our life.

There are many complex operations within my computer that I depend upon as I am typing. I don’t understand most of them, but we even say our computer has an operating system. Since there is a one-to-one correspondence between which key I strike and the letter that appears on the screen, I am able to produce words. This is how computers work in this world even though most of it is a mystery to most of us.

We can proceed with our daily lives depending on the detailed things we believe and the thinking that supports them. In summary, we think to arrive at a belief, we think to analyze a belief and we think to revise a belief. We rely on our knowledge base as a source for that thinking and use the marvelous brains that the Lord has given us.

What thinking that is involved in the drive part of the belief drives practice principle? A good reminder is to recall that much of this thinking is something of which we are not particularly aware. Perhaps this is a good place to introduce a principle from Dallas Willard that is very similar to the principle of belief drives practice. He has a principle called VIM. The “V” is for vision, the “I” is for intention and the “M” is for means. Vision kind of parallels belief, intention parallels drive, and means parallels practice.

We cannot visualize without thinking, and usually the thinking is very focused. Also, usually the focus is thinking about what or how something ought to be. We are visualizing a positive situation or outcome. This visualization about the belief sets the stage for the commitment to move into drive or intention. It all starts in our head.

The thinking surrounding drive does involve the will and intention because the drive involves the movement. If you drive a vehicle, it is understood that the vehicle moves, or if you drive a horse we understand that the horse moves. Drive turns the belief into practice. In the drive part of the principle, we are thinking about how we are going to perform the practice. We may be thinking about when we are going to perform the practice. We may be thinking about what the practice will look like.
