An alternative AUV searching method solution follows:

If the sea floor of the Indian Ocean is too deep for the Bluefin-21 to operate safely (where the B-777 is said to have come to rest), then a towed AUV, having an operating depth of twenty thousand feet below the ocean surface, could be working the search zone. A towed AUV can be advantageous, in that, it never has to surface daily for battery maintenance and computerized reprogramming (necessary to send the Bluefin-21 AUV to a particular zone in a particular fashion). Additionally, its tow cable does three functions:

Continuously towing the AUV twenty-four hours/seven days weekly,

Delivering higher electrical cable voltages, thereby powering enhanced, larger sonar, that can map larger search areas,

And it transmits continuous live streaming imagery (perhaps photographic/video/digital), and other information.
