“Kay, wake up. Come on, please wake up.”

The bars on my cell were rattling. Urgh, what time was it? I rubbed my eyes and heaved myself up to a sitting position. My hand groped for the matches lying on the nightstand. When my fingers found the box, I whipped it open and struck a match in one clean swipe. I lit a strawberry-scented candle and held it up in the centre of the room.

“Leo!” The candle slipped from my hand, but I caught it before it hit the rug. “What are you doing here?”

“Rescuing you, of course.” Leo poked his head through the railings. “Nice place you’ve got here.”

I ran to the gate and kissed him through the bars. “How did you get in here? There are pixies everywhere.”

“Ta-da!” He pulled a glowing metal tube from under his sleeve and waved it in my face. “All I needed was this little beauty. It got me through the tricky pixie security in thirty seconds flat.”

“A pipe?” I raised my eyebrow.

“No, not a pipe,” he said, mimicking me. “The Opea.” When he saw the blank expression on my face, he continued. “A magic cylinder thing. It was made outside of Callowdon, in some other realm. Futuristic, right?” He twirled it between his fingers. “I borrowed it from Articker.”

“And he just gave it to you?”

“Not exactly. It was more like an extremely pricey favour.”

Leo tapped the pipe on the bars three times. A bright green beam shot from the end of it, followed by a loud click. The gate swung open.

“I have to get it back to him in a few hours. Otherwise, he’ll have my head or whatever.” He rolled his eyes. “Come on, let’s get you out of here,” he paused, looking me up and down, “but not before you change out of that fluorescent monstrosity.” He laughed and held out his hand.

I looked at his open palm, wanting nothing more than to take it and flee this place, but I couldn’t unstick my feet from the floor. Mai-Ling’s threats echoed in my head. I backed away from him, withdrawing to the corner of the room.

“I can’t.”

“What? Why?”

“Because I’d be putting your life in danger.” I set the candle down. “Mai-Ling was in here earlier and she threatened to…” I tried to find the right words to explain but I couldn’t bring myself to repeat what she’d said. “Forget about me, okay?” I turned my back to him. I couldn’t stand to see that look on his face. “Find a nice nymph to make you happy. Any girl would be lucky to have you.” My voice was shaky, but I managed to get through it.

Leo slipped his hand in mine and turned me around to face him. “At the risk of sounding epically cheesy, the only way this Mai-Ling could take my life is if she managed to take you away from me. Because you are my life.” He pulled me into his arms, and I instantly melted in his strong grasp.
