CHAPTER 7
Short term glory
Short term glory. That’s the term I’d used to determine this part of my life. Wl, glory could replaced with a number of other words: happiness, joy, serenity, other positive sounding nouns. It’s not like I wanted the happiness to end, it just sort of faded through a long time period of horrible events. It started this morning, a year after I’d started hanging around with Riley and Amber. The unraveling of my world began with a news program.
Not too long ago, I contemplated giving some of my mother’s insurance money away to one of the African charities that the news channels scrolled at the bottom of the screen every morning. I’d forgotten about that quest when I started dating Amber, but here it was, and I scrambled to grab a pen and paper. I barely got back to the tv in time to scribble down one of the last charities they promoted. I was going to make some inquiries to them fairly soon.
I figured an annual donation of around $500 was good enough for them. I mean, it was probably more than most, but certainly not the best one-time-a-year donation. I’m sure those rare moments when the wealthy bestow a fraction of their riches to the needy blew my meager contribution out of the water.
I would give the charity a call later, but today, I was hoping to expand upon my super membership at Neptune Fitness. Today, I was going to make the leap to premium. Now, I had not been losing fat, but I had started to get used to the pattern. Workout about two to three hours everyday. I was still the same size, but I was getting better at working the machines and the free weights. The treadmill at a certain elevation was still my worst enemy, but I’d overcome that hurdle one day, well, I was sure I would, until I made a quick stop at the bank.
I tried to replenish the supplies for my diet, but the grocery store said my card was declined, and that shouldn’t be correct. I had them swipe a few more times, but with the line growing, along with the hostility of the other patrons, I took my card, returned my groceries, and then headed straight to the source.
I was speechless to learn that both my checkings and savings had been ravaged by the enormity of the gym membership fees. I forgot that I’d made the payments automatic, and neglected to put those into account when budgeting. I had many other bills to attend to, so in the one year time span, I had spent over $700 more dollars than I made room for. I was broke, and to make matters worse, I was jobless and rent was due in two weeks. No way I was going to make that.
I left the bank and sat in my car. I left the engine off. At this point, I needed to pinch as many pennies as I could.
