“I’ll be finished in half an hour; go inside and stir the fire and get some water boiling; I need to wash and there is a pumpkin soup; the bread is old but soaked in the soup it will suffice for tonight…” I disappeared into the cottage and set to about heating the water and then I heard voices outside; slightly raised; one was Dan’s and one was the farmer’s. I heard the hammer hit the anvil once and the sound shook the very walls of the cottage and then there was silence. Dan appeared at the door;

“He says he does not want the new plough”

“The tremors become quakes”

“We shall have need of strength and patience; are you ready for the fight?”

“I am ready if you are by my side”

“Then we are ready; I am hot and dirty; is the water ready?”

“Nearly…”

He entered and stood watching the flames for a minute, and then he turned to me;
