BUILDINGS ON THE SUMMIT

The first house of any sort to be built at the summit was a small stone cabin, followed immediately by two others. Ethan A. Crawford completed the building in July 1823. One of these contained a roll of sheet lead, on which the names of visitors were scratched. This was, in fact, the first “register” of Mount Washington. Owing to excessive dampness, these cabins were rarely used and finally fell into disrepair. They eventually disappeared from the summit. The ruined stonewalls of one of these huts may still be seen near the tank by the Cog Railway.
