Surprise, Surprise

We were just back from Africa and France in April 2010, when I began our study of the Civil Rights Movement and then took off for a tour of significant sites in the South (Selma, Montgomery, Birmingham). By the middle of summer, I was feeling completely content with our year’s adventure and resigned to sending the boys to eighth and sixth grade at our local school in the fall. But then they came out with this:

“I kind of don’t want to go to public school,” Gus said a few days before our meeting with the middle school guidance counselor. Jeb agreed. By this time, the boys had heard about what seemed to them like a grueling schedule—catching the bus at 8:00 in the morning and not getting home sometimes till 4:30 or 5:00. They heard about hours of homework in the evenings.

“But you’d have a lot more friends,” I said, before ticking off other advantages of organized school, like dances and football games. But the boys were clear that they liked more freedom in their days and were happy with the social life they had with neighbors and other homeschoolers. Robb and I conferred about finances and frequent flier miles, and we decided we could squeeze out another year. For the fall, we signed the boys up for once-a-week classes in math and science at an academy designed to give homeschooling kids the rigorous curriculum they needed for college.

This time we could only afford to do one big trip. I knew just what it would be.
