Chapter Thirty-Eight

Sitting in front of the screen, Dale Bryson felt the rage build in his stomach. ‘How can the fucking footage be missing?’

‘Mr Bryson, I’m sorry you’re going through a tough time right now, but this is a school. Could you please refrain from swearing.’

Dale shot Ms Phillips a look and then decided against answering her back. Being a head teacher – or in fact any kind of teacher – must mean that you couldn’t vary the way you spoke to adults and pupils. It was like the switch was stuck on teacher mode all the time.

‘I think we should contact the police about this matter. Maybe they’ll be able to pull footage from cameras in the surrounding areas to determine who the person is that approached your son?’

Dale nodded. ‘I’ll do that,’ he said, thinking about his connections with the local police. They’d listen to him far quicker than they’d listen to her because a lot of them were on his payroll.

‘Mr Bryson, I can assure you that we will do everything we can to keep Jack safe. We can encourage him to stay inside at break times, we can ask that staff circle the perimeter of the school during break times to make sure that anyone who seems suspicious is dealt with quickly. But what I don’t want is for us to fall into the trap where Jack feels unsafe because we’re taking these measures.’

‘He already feels unsafe after what happened last week.’ Dale sighed, feeling deflated. ‘I’d prefer proper security measures were put in place. I can look at placing my own guards around the grounds. Or maybe we should home school him until we’ve dealt with the culprit.’

‘I understand your reasoning for that, Mr Bryson. But isolating Jack isn’t in his best interests. I think the thing to do for Jack is to keep things as normal as possible. I’m not sure the education board would be too happy about external security coming onto school grounds, though.’

‘I need to speak to my wife about all this,’ he replied, ignoring her comment about his own security plans.

‘Of course. I’ll be here whenever you and your wife want to speak. Anytime, no appointment needed.’

Dale was grateful for the fact that Ms Phillips had finally dropped the teacher act and was now treating him like an adult. Maybe now she could see how serious he was.

‘Thank you. I appreciate that your school’s reputation is on the line here, Ms Phillips. We wouldn’t want other parents finding out that their children are in danger because the school failed in its duty to keep good surveillance. If they thought a gunman had been near their children, I’m sure they’d whip their kids out in no time, which would mean a great financial loss to the school.’

Ms Phillips stared at Dale, her eyes wide and unblinking. He was sure she heard the words the way he’d intended them – as a warning.

‘I’ll try to locate the missing footage, Mr Bryson.’

He nodded and then left.
