While the bombs smashed the bunkers and drove back the NVA RPG skirmishers, one fell too close to Bravo and killed a popular Swedish Minnesotan named Myles Westman. His death demoralized his comrades and sent Lieutenant Boccia into such a prolonged frenzy of anger and grief that his immediate superior, Captain Littnan, considered cashiering him on the spot. Several other men suffered wounds from their own side’s bomb shrapnel.

When Boccia regained control, Bravo Company attempted to advance. Both Charlie and Bravo Companies met such stiff resistance in the following hours, however, that both stopped and eventually fell back. The North Vietnamese attacked vigorously with AK-47 fire, RPGs launched from hidden spiderholes, and grenades sent tumbling down the steep slopes to burst among the Americans.
