Nonmonogamy and Romantic Fashioning
The romantic fashioning view helps us attend to the structural features of romantic life. Some relationships may encourage certain forms of guiding narrative and practical dynamics which benefit the people involved. These benefits may not outweigh the harms of indifferent or abusive partners, and they are certainly not sufficient for romantic flourishing but they may be substantial, and they deserve consideration. In this section, I suggest nonmonogamous relationships have such beneficial structural dynamics.
I will focus on consensual nonmonogamous relationships which involve emotional bonds with other people, such as a domestic triad, or polyamorous people with several concurrent loving relationships. I shall assume there is significant interaction between these people, but much of what I say will apply, to a lesser extent, to other kinds of nonmonogamous life.
Some of the claims below are contingent on the current shape of romantic norms and attitudes. If those norms and attitudes were different, and the gap between monogamous and nonmonogamous life was smaller, then nonmonogamous lovers would be fashioned in a different way. Some of the claims, however, are more structural, and would survive changes to contingent social norms.
Two core features give nonmonogamous romantic life its particular structure. First, and more contingently, there are few social exemplars or narratives for this kind of relationship. Second, and more substantively, people have to contend with the active influence of more than one other romantic partner. I will consider both in turn.
