Chapter 12

Changes

Max had never been happier to return to New York City. He couldn’t wait to go back to the academy and resume his training, couldn’t wait to fall asleep in his own bed instead of a tent.

McCready was still out there, but they’d destroyed the bulk of his forces. They’d done what they’d set out to do, and now they could all return home. Manuel was making plans to rebuild the Council. It would take time to fill all the seats but as soon as he had enough members to spare, he would send out a team to hunt McCready down. Some of the agency’s allies had remained in Alaska trying to find a trace of him. They would be in touch with Ben if they had any news.

When the plane touched down at JFK, Max could have kissed the dirty terminal ground.

“Home at last!” Ryan said, arms open wide as if to embrace the whole airport.

Izzie groaned. “I need a huge margarita.”

“Sis, same,” Ryan agreed.

Manuel was frozen, his eyes darting around. Veronica touched his shoulder. “It must be overwhelming for you.”

“It is,” Manuel said, jumping when a voice blasted over the PA system. “I haven’t been in an airport in years, forget a city.”

Veronica squeezed his hand. “Don’t worry, I’ll make sure you don’t eat anybody.”

He grimaced. “That’s not funny, mi amor. I might.”

Gabe chuckled beside Max. “Let’s get a cab before my dad murders someone.”

His father’s breath hitched. “Please, tell me ground transportation isn’t the hot mess it used to be.”

Max smiled. “Wouldn’t be New York if you didn’t get an aneurysm trying to get home from JFK.”

Manuel’s eyes watered, and his lips quivered. “Home. Goddess. I’m going home.”

Hugging him tight, Veronica said, “You are, mi corazón, and you will never leave again.”

Manuel caressed her hair and sniffed, thumbing away a tear.

Gabe and Izzie grabbed their parents. “Come on,” Gabe said, “let’s get home before we all get too weepy.”

Looking around for his own mother, Max found her holding Luna’s hand. Luna kept pointing to everything that caught her attention and saying she wanted to go on another airplane ride around the world.

“What will we do about the kids?” Max murmured to Gabe.

He frowned. “I don’t know, Lobito. I think Ben has a plan, though. We’ll see.”

Max hoped they could do something to help Tommy and little Luna. They were orphans, and they’d been looking after themselves for far too long.

It took an hour to get a ride out of the airport, at least for Gabe and Max’s families. The rest of the agency split up into different cars. Ben’s ex-mate and his sons came to pick him up. He hugged both his boys, then before he got into the car, he faced the agency wolves. “I won’t get too sappy here,” he said, “because it’s not a luxury we have. This fight with McCready ain’t over ’till that bastard’s dead.”

Zach said, “That’s right. We accomplished a lot in Alaska, even if he’s still alive, but by taking Luna and Tommy with us, we only gave him more reason to want us dead.
