The sitting area off the main corridor of the house in Elisa’s family’s estate was small, but the group gathered there after leaving the finished basement. Fully roaming the above-average Victorian styled and well-appointed home was not something any of them felt comfortable doing. They had all been able to shower and change their attire in the five spread-out bathrooms that filled the house, but ventured no further. There were three levels and one split level that Tobias joked within his own thoughts about being a “half-floor.” The outside of the home was deceiving as to the wide-openness of its layout on the inside. The wrap around wood porch, understated earthy green paint color, and contrasted shutters, had felt regal to Tobias even though it was still dark when they had approached the house. Few in the town of Blackwood Forest had ever seen the estate; its half-mile-long driveway and 10-foot rod-iron gate meant the only town folks to travel up to the house were extremely limited.

Exploring, hesitantly, Tobias surveyed their environment. Inside the large dwelling were pristine hardwood floors that were so clean he thought to himself maybe they had been lacquered with a glistening type of epoxy. The walls were minimally adorned with paintings and felt like a museum. More important to him than the size or richness of its interior though, the place was warm and dry.

Returning to the group but keeping himself separated, by only a few feet given the size of the formal sitting area, Tobias wandered into his thoughts. He was happy to be alone with his own thinking if only for a few minutes. A myriad of different feelings had sprung up within him since he was kidnapped and forced to fight, and he had yet had the time to process any of them. Thoughts on life and death, love and hate, mortality and immortality, bombarded him regularly. He tried his best not to think on them for any length of time, but they were there, always present, waiting to jump into his mind at any moment. The strangest of the thoughts, the one that regularly twisted his guts up into knots, was how he felt about Marcus. It was an odd attraction to the man that he had never fully recognized. For years beyond count, the two had run together in the woods, made jokes, regularly inappropriate in nature, and been a support to one another. They didn’t see each other every day, but it hardly mattered. Tobias felt like their bond had grown exponentially since the madness had begun. Looking at Marcus, who spoke quietly with Hahnyel, Tobias smiled. I would love some Purple Kush right now. The fleeting desire came and went with the whisper of the floorboard heating unit turning on.

Hahnyel snapped her attention from Marcus to Tobias. “I do not know of Purple Kush, but if it is the Fragrant Leaf you wish to enjoy, I have a small amount remaining.”

Shocked by Hahnyel eavesdropping on his personal thoughts, Tobias leaned in slightly with wide eyes and partially opened mouth.
