Exoticism and Structuralism in Wallace Stevens

On the conventional periodizing account, Wallace Stevens’s work, a monumental summa of the modernist languages in formation in the 1920s and 1930s and even the immediate post-World War Two era, constitutes the privileged object which a postwar “ideology of modernism”1 seeks to theorize, as well as the prototype of everything in literature with which the 1960s wished to break. Yet perhaps there were other developments in the 1960s which Stevens can be said to have anticipated:

This endlessly elaborating poem

Displays the theory of poetry,

As the life of poetry. A more severe,

More harassing master would extemporize

Subtler, more urgent proof that the theory

Of poetry is the theory of life. …
