The Water Dragon Classic, dating to about 600 C.E. states: “If water pours away from a site, it drains off and is hurried, how can it be abundant and water accumulate? If it comes in straight and goes out straight it injures men. Darting left the eldest son meets with misfortune, darting right the youngest son meets with calamity.”

Watercourses are classified as trunks and branches. The hsueh (your home, the site, the dragon’s lair or cave) should nestle among branch watercourses, subsidiary flows rather than the main trunk. Water is the path of chi, and inner branches stop and gather chi. The more branches of a river, the more chi to be gathered. The big rivers are the arteries or pulses of the Earth. Don’t, however, site too close to the main branch; water runs by too fast to allow the gentle penetration of chi at the site.
