ON MONDAY, CHARLES spent hours revising a chapter of his book but couldn’t get it to where he wanted it. Finally, at three in the afternoon, he gave up for the day in frustration, getting a glass of ice tea and taking it into the living room to stretch out on the leather sofa.

He had a picture of the book he wanted to write in his mind, but he couldn’t get the words to cooperate. Everything he wrote turned into a pale reflection of the story he wanted to tell.

Maybe he wasn’t cut out for being a writer.

Maybe he’d been wasting his time this year.

Maybe his family was right that he was cut out only for business so that’s where he should be putting his time and effort and focus.

Maybe in six weeks he’d have to admit to everyone that they were right about him and he was wrong.

He almost choked on a swallow of tea because he didn’t raise his head enough to take the sip.

“What are you doing in here?” Ariana said, sticking her head in from the hallway. “Did you stop working early today?”

“Yeah. Not making any good progress, so I just gave up for the day.”

She came in and dropped into the lounge chair beside the couch. Her bridal shop was closed on Mondays, so she was dressed casually in a loose top and leggings. “You sound like you’re down in the dumps.”

“Not really.”

Her eyes studied his face silently for a minute before she said, “You are. What’s the matter?”

“Nothing really. Just the chapter’s not cooperating.”

“I thought your first draft was really good.”

“Uh, thanks, but you’re my sister. I’m not sure you’re an unbiased critic.”

“I’m not unbiased at all, but I do think it’s really good. You just hold yourself to impossible standards, and then you get discouraged when you can’t meet them. You’ve always been that way.”

“I don’t have impossible standards.”

“For everyone else? Definitely not. But for yourself? You know very well you do.”

When they were kids, they’d teased and bickered and complained about each other the way siblings always do. But they’d always been close, and they’d gotten even closer as they’d grown up. Ariana invariably told him the truth, so he had no reason to doubt her words now.

“I guess,” he muttered.

“So give yourself a break.”

He gave her a hint of a smile. “I’ll try, but I’m not very good at that.”

She snorted in amusement and stretched her legs out to get more comfortable. “So you’re just down about the book?”

“What else would I be down about?”

“I don’t know. Maybe this weird thing you’re doing with Taylor.”

He sat up straight, immediately on guard by the casually posed comment. “Why would I be down about that?”

“No particular reason. Just that it’s strange and not like you at all.”

“Why isn’t it like me?”

“To fake a girlfriend? Of course it’s not like you.”

“She explained everything to you.”

“I know she did. And I do understand why you want a break from Mom and Grandma’s nagging. But still...” She was watching him again.
