âNow, let us proceed to the Divine Calling Ceremony. Please look over here.â The bishop reached into the fire with his right hand and drew a circle. Flames poured out of the pledge jewel ring and formed the shape of a magic circle. âThis is the magic circle for Liteld, the foundation for using the pledge jewel. With this spell, faithful followers can summon dragons or gods and have them do their bidding. However, gods are the hands of the Almighty Radiance, so they do not form pacts so easily.â
While the spell was similar to the summoning spells of the world above, there were fundamental differences in how it worked. Liteldâs spell formula alone wasnât able to summon anythingâthe spell relied on the existence of the pledge jewel.
âNow, come this way. First, I will tell you all about dragons, the messengers of the gods.â
The bishop stood on a magic circle on the floor. We stood inside the circle with him, and he used his magic to teleport us to a room farther beneath the ground. This room was immense in size, the ceiling reaching high above.
âThis is the Ceremonial Hall used for conducting Divine Calling Ceremony. If you can successfully use your pledge jewels to cast Liteld, you will be able to receive a summons. In other words, you will obtain a duty to fulfill for the gods.â
It seemed this vast space was used for summoning magic. After all, there was no fitting a dragon in a tiny room. The bishop continued his explanation courteously.
âThe pledge jewel, which was brought to this underground world in ancient times, has the power to summon six dragons by the order of the gods. These dragons are Deiro, superior in fire and strength; Sita of flight and teleportation; the sturdy Garon; Fron of healing and grace; Vista of stealth and concealment; and Dogu of binding and restraints. When summoning a dragon through Liteld, it isnât a dragon from the underground world that gets called. The pledge jewel is actually opening a gate to the Divine Realm and calling a dragon from there. As a servant of gods, that dragon then descends into this land in an appropriate form.â
The bishop showed us his pledge jewel ring as he spoke. âThrough Liteld, the messengers of god appear underground, blessing the lives of the people here. Dragons are the messengers that sustain our lives. They are the house that shelters us, the flesh that feeds us, the feet that carry us. The followers who have received a divine calling are the keys to the gate that brings them to this land.â
It seemed that, rather than the dragon itself, it was the source of the dragon being summoned. That explained why Azept allowed the direct use of the dragonâs power, while using Liteld made the pledge ring create a physical body for the source. Pledge rings were apparently assigned by the first proxy of godâin other words, someone who could use the orders of the godsâso it wasnât impossible.
