§ 5. The Shape of Love

Two pillars of light rose from the enchanted forest. One of them was from Lay, who drew a magic circle and summoned the Sword of Three Races. The blade, which had once been transformed into the Sword of the Almighty, had been returned to its original form by Arcana. Lay and Misa’s Teo Aske converted their love into magic and wrapped around Evansmana, extending the blade into a longsword. Lay took several steps forward.

“Misa,” he said with a gentle smile, looking back at the girl behind him, “wish me luck.”

“Um, what to say...” Misa briefly looked down in embarrassment. Then her gaze met his. “I... I want to see you win today, my beloved.”

The next moment, in an explosion of light, the Teo Aske around Evansmana shone brighter than ever before. Lay and Misa’s love was shining brighter now than it had when they’d faced Avos Dilhevia or when they’d fought the Royal Dragon.

Of course, their opponents were none other than Shin and myself. Even though they had lost to us before in demon sword battles, the couple couldn’t afford to lose in a battle of Teo Aske. That was why the bond between them—their love—was blazing passionately, but there was one man who was glaring at that glittering fruit with fierce contempt. Shin took a quiet step forward towards Lay.

“I have a humble request of you, my liege,” he said to me. “Please allow me to be the first to demonstrate true love to them.”

“I’ll allow it. Demonstrate to your heart’s content.” I returned Shin’s steel sword to him. Bright light had gathered around the blade—I had activated Teo Aske to convert our love into magic.

“How many times have we faced each other like this, Lay Grandsley?” Shin asked.

“I couldn’t say. I lost count some time ago.”

The two held their glowing swords at the ready, and their gazes met. The normally smiling Lay was unusually serious even before crossing swords. He had even more drive than he’d had that time he’d said he’d protect me. That was how strongly he felt about this.

“Ever since that demon sword class, I’ve been thinking. There was one thing I swore to myself—that the next time I faced you, I’d definitely land one hit.”

“Save the chatter. I’ll land ten hits on you in that time.”

Shin’s eyes were as cold as a sharpened blade. His bloodlust was as bare as the first time I met him. However, at the same time, there was an emotion contrary to the yearning for death swirling around him. He was about to fight with an emotion he had never fought with, not even two thousand years ago.

Lay was the challenger; Shin was the opponent. Both knew they couldn’t lose. Their feelings of love poured into their swords.

“Here I go.”

“I’ll bring you down.”

Lay and Shin raised their swords of love higher. There were no tricks involved—they weren’t about to flee using their skills. This was a one-on-one fight between love and love, emotions and emotions.
