§ 13. Dora the Liar

The dream continued. Arcana staggered towards the fireplace with heavy firewood in her arms. What would have been an easy task for an adult was a huge challenge for the body of a six-or-seven-year-old.

“Heave-ho,” she said, tossing the wood into the burning fire.

The cold of the billowing snow outside was seeping into the house. Arcana wrapped herself in a blanket and held her hands out over the fire. Just then, two knocks rang from the front door.

Arcana’s eyes lit up. “Big brother!” she called happily, hurrying to unlock the door. But when she opened it and saw the man on the other side, she took a step back. “Huh? Who are you?”

The middle-aged man was dressed in blue robes. His expression was haggard, and there was a look of madness in his eyes as he stared at Arcana.

“I’ve found you. The sacrifice...” he murmured. Two more men in the same blue robes appeared behind him. They looked like evil apparitions.

“She must be offered...”

“The sacrifice to the gods...”

“Now give yourself up as an offering!”

Arcana backed away. The men followed her into the house.

“N-No! Go away!” she shrieked.

But the men reached for her without a care until—

“Gah!”

Firewood went flying through the house, slicing the air and striking the men on the back of their heads. They crumpled over and fell to their knees.

“Hmm. What do you want with my sister?”

A black-haired, black-eyed boy of around ten years of age appeared in the doorway. It was Arcana’s older brother, Anos.

“Brother!” Arcana dived into Anos’s arms and clung to him tightly.

“Stand back, Arcana. I struck them with enough force to render the average demon unconscious, but it seems these aren’t average demons.”

The men struggled to their feet, clutching their heads.

“Why do you defy the teachings, boy?”

“That child is the sacrifice. The dragons will not be appeased until she is offered to the gods.”

“Ignorant outsiders should stay out of this! The dragons are running rampant because you took the girl!”

Arcana trembled at the men’s wrath.

“What are you talking about? If the dragons are out of control, suppress them by force. Full-grown adults like you shouldn’t be foisting the blame onto my sister and me.”

“Shut up, you dumb brat! An idiot that doesn’t understand logic that’s already been explained to them has no right to open their mouth!”

The men drew their swords and swung at Anos. He held up a hand and created a barrier, making the swords snap on impact. Then, as a counterattack, Anos used Griad to burn the men, but scales appeared on their skin to block the obsidian flames.

“Hmm. You’re unusual demons. I’ve never heard of anyone who could grow scales. The wavelength of your magic is slightly different too.” Anos glared at the men with his Magic Eyes. “Are you really demons?”

“We’re not obligated to answer a fool! Die, brat!”

The men opened their jaws, revealing their sharp fangs. Scorching fire shot from the back of their throats, consuming Anos.

“Brother!”

“I’m fine. Today was a little chilly anyway. This is the perfect temperature.
