For some unique island handicrafts, visit the Care-Co Workshop (Mon–Fri 8.30am–3pm, Sat 8.30am–noon; tel: 230 831 1766, www.careco-rodrigues.com) at Camp du Roi at the back of town. It is a charity where people with disabilities make coconut crafts and jewellery items. An apiary also produces the clear and distinctly flavoured Rodriguan honey, which has consistently won international awards.

Visitors wanting some nightlife, meanwhile, should look out for hand-written bills advertising une grande soiree dansante. These are big nights out, not to be missed, when you can let your hair down. On paydays and holidays or roughly once a month, everyone from babes in arms to robust Rodriguan grannies dance to seggae and reggae beneath flashing lights, surrounded by smooching couples. Try the alfresco discos at Les Cocotiers at Camp du Roi or the Recif at Anse aux Anglais.
