The Root Chakra—Your Security Lens
The first chakra lens regulates your sense of safety and security. If you are struggling with this chakra, you are afraid of not being able to take care of your most basic needs, including food, shelter, and clothing. This chakra is located at the base of the spine, in the area of the perineum, and is represented by the color red. When you have money, you may feel a sense of temporary relief, but when you don’t, all hell breaks loose inside and your fears can consume all of your thoughts, which leads to “tunneling,” as previously discussed in chapter 1.
When you are looking at life through a warped security lens, there is a strong chance that the game you are playing with money is called “playing not to lose,” rather than “playing to win.” Playing not to lose is about avoiding your fears surrounding lack. These fears start very early in life. One memory that plagued me for many years involves an archetypical story.
I was in fourth grade and I had saved some money up that I kept in my purse. My parents took us to a neighborhood concert in Berkeley, California, for the day, and I was excited to bring my purse with me. I remember playing in a park on the swings and slides and having the time of my life listening to music. At some point we walked around the nearby shops and I came across a necklace I wanted to buy with my money. I looked down to open my purse and realized it was gone. I immediately started running back to the park, instinctively knowing I had left it there.
Upon reaching the park I saw my purse laying in the dirt, and as I picked it up I could see that it was open and the money was gone. The devastation I felt about losing my money was tremendous. I knew it was my fault and I vowed to never lose money again due to my carelessness. Sure enough, I’ve lost my purse or wallet only a few other times since then, and when it happens I’m immediately brought back to my childhood feelings. Funny enough, I think this affected me far beyond losing my purse and transferred into an unreasonable fear of losing my money in any situation.
Thankfully, this fear does not have to be your reality. As the root chakra comes into balance, you feel a sense of grounded strength that translates into your relationship with money. This helps you be both flexible and consistent in your money-making activities so you can take more risk, which helps you to dynamically move through life. As a result, you feel stronger and more capable when it comes to earning money consistently and sufficiently, so your fears about security and safety no longer cause you to avoid situations in which you might lose or fail, thereby shifting into a play-to-win mentality.
