The Marine Corps Recruit Depot evolved markedly in the era between the two world wars. When first established, broad tidal flats separated the complex from San Diego Bay, as this aerial shows. In 1933, the Marines were reorganized to become the Fleet Marine Force, whose primary mission was to seize bases for naval operations in war. Since the bulk of the Pacific Fleet was in San Diego, Fleet Marine Force’s headquarters was moved to San Diego. MCRD underwent significant expansion in the late 1930s as war loomed. Storehouses, barracks, mess facilities, a post office, parade ground, medical facilities, roads, railroads, and hundreds of 16-man huts were constructed. By 1939, the base, even with ancillary facilities in La Jolla and Kearny Mesa for firearms training, had become overcrowded.
