Chapter 18

They sailed on until Calla surfaced, putting her hand up to call a halt.

“Did you find him?” Abigail asked.

Calla nodded, her eyes large in her face. Hugo reached a hand over and pulled her on board. As the air hit her legs, the webbing faded, and they returned to normal. She quickly slipped her dress over her head.

“Where is he?” Hugo asked.

Before Calla could answer, the water swelled, shifting the boat sideways. The tip of the serpent’s tail whipped up and then slapped down next to the boat, narrowly missing it.

“We’re being attacked!” Hugo shouted.

“We need to move,” Abigail said. “Calla, wind spell, now.”

She planted her feet on the deck as Calla joined her, and together they thrust their hands in the air, crying, “Ventimus!” A sharp gust of wind puffed out the sails, and the ship lurched forward.

Up ahead, the undulating body of the serpent broke the surface. The emerald-green scales shone in the water, and his wedge-shaped head was aimed straight at them. Abigail could make out a thick collar of seaweed wrapped around his neck, and a familiar woman with flowing green hair stood on top of his head, her feet planted wide as she guided the serpent toward them.

“Capricorn has seen us,” Hugo shouted. “We need more than just wind.”

Abigail tried to think of a way out, but the serpent was bearing down on them so fast. All she could see were his fangs and angry eyes. Capricorn appeared to be laughing, her face lit up in triumph.

“Think, Abigail, think.” Her mind raced through every spell she’d learned but she came up empty. Nothing short of a miracle would save them from the jaws of that oncoming beast.

Let me help, Abignus whispered.

Abigail didn’t bother to argue. “Tell me.”

Levantus.

“Just one word?”

It’s all you need. If you open yourself up to your darkness.

Abigail took in a deep breath, closing her eyes to block out the sight of Capricorn speeding toward them.

“Abigail, do something!” Hugo shouted.

Cold spread through her, reaching her fingertips. When she was ready, she opened her eyes and shouted, “Levantus!”

The serpent’s maw yawned wide as he leaped from the water, aiming his jaws at them. The head was large enough to swallow three of Jasper’s ships whole. But his jaws snapped on empty air as the ship shot up out of the water and out of reach.

Below them, Capricorn let out a squeal of rage as she urged Jormungand around for another pass. The ship was floating over the water, carried forward by the wind. It was taking everything Abigail had to keep it aloft.

Calla leaned over the side, sending down blasts of witchfire until Jormungand suddenly dove, disappearing from sight.

“Do you think they’re gone?” she asked.

“No. They’re preparing for another strike,” Abigail said with certainty. “We need to go higher. Calla, I need your help.”

Calla looked frightened. “But I don’t have dark magic.”

“Yes, you do. All witches have it. You just have to open yourself up to it.”

She hesitated.

“Do you want to live or not?” Abigail could feel her strength fading.
