CHAPTER THIRTY

THE NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH

East of Downtown Los Angeles, California, United States

The portal Gen created based on Emperor’s instructions took her to a residential neighborhood east of downtown Los Angeles. It felt good to be back to her usual appearance, having discarded the disguise of Todd Butler. It had been easy enough for her to slip out of City Hall, avoiding any questions from anyone else about her role as an intern.

Gen was grateful that she and Emperor got what they needed for their next steps of the investigation and that she didn’t need to waste any extra time there at City Hall. Right then, she was antsy about what was really going on with the property developers and more in this area of Los Angeles.

This neighborhood was where Emperor had led her to because it was where the Mayor planned to take over. According to everything they’d learned, the property here was incredibly valuable based on location. However, it was currently full of residents with homes they’d paid off long ago and were unwilling to sell. And that’s why the politicians and Dwayne Stone were looking for their advantages to take over this part of Los Angeles and then spread their claws over the rest of the city.

As Gen stepped through into the new area, she was immediately struck by the sense of warmth and community that seemed to emanate from every corner. The neighborhood street stretched out before her—full of a strange welcoming familiarity like she’d been there before, although she hadn’t.

The tree-covered lane was a patchwork of modest homes, each one a unique storybook of sorts to the lives and stories of the families who called this place home. The houses, though older, had a charm and character that spoke of generations of love and care. Some were painted in vibrant colors, like a certain cheery yellow bungalow with the white picket fence that seemed to call to Gen. There were others that embraced a more classic look, with muted earth tones and well-maintained wooden porches.

The yards were a delightful hodgepodge of personality and creativity. One house boasted a meticulously tended rose garden, the delicate blooms perfuming the air with their sweet fragrance. Another had a quirky collection of lawn ornaments, from a smiling gnome to a whimsical wind chime that tinkled in the gentle breeze.

The sounds of children’s laughter echoed from a nearby yard. Within the safety of a grassy lawn, there was a group of youngsters who were engaged in a lively game of tag, their joy infectious and pure. It was evident that this was a place where people lived and grew and formed connections. This was a neighborhood, full of places people called “home.”

As Gen strode along the sidewalk, she couldn’t help but notice the small details that made this neighborhood feel so alive. The scent of freshly baked bread wafted from an open window. This aroma of comfort mingled with the earthy aroma of the old trees that lined the street, their gnarled branches reaching out to provide speckled shade.
