Angelo Gambino picked up the telephone as the women fussed around a new customer.

“Angelo, what can I do for you?” the voice on the other end asked.

“I have some news for Don Vadala. Giselle has been here with Signor Maderno.”

“You have done well, Angelo, you will be rewarded.”

“It is reward enough to help Don Vadala.”

Angelo’s loyalty and protection were strictly owed to Maderno but Vadala’s threat to have him closed down and wipe his wife, children and gay lover from existence was enough to sow the seeds of betrayal. He listened to the line go dead and felt relieved, it was the end of his participation in the feud between Vadala and his grandson. He didn’t know why the pretty woman was important to Vadala, and he didn’t care. All he had been told was that Vadala’s grandson was very taken with her and would no doubt bring her to the shop to dress her as he did with all the women he courted, and he should advise the Padrino if he saw her. Now all Angelo had to worry about was if Maderno found out that it was Angelo who had betrayed him.
