TIPS: If you choose to use freeze-dried or dehydrated fruit, these oatmeal jars can be stored in the pantry. They have a shelf life of about six weeks. If you prefer fresh fruit, store them in the fridge.

Labeling the jars helps take the guesswork out of picking the perfect oatmeal for breakfast. A permanent marker works really well to write on the lid and washes off with soap and water.

Meals in a Jar

The task of creating meals in a jar was a little more challenging than creating salads. I turned to my coworkers, friends, and family for inspiration. One coworker in particular, a self-proclaimed mason jar expert, suggested recipes, brought in her mason jar lunches to show off, and helped me get the wheels turning for how I could make mason jars work for any meal of the day.

The idea of creating an entire meal in a jar without any special boxes or containers is very appealing to me, and hopefully to you as well. There are a few recipes for “deconstructed” meals in this section, including sushi and “sandwiches.” There are also suggestions on how to pack a complete picnic lunch, from soup to nuts, so to speak. Once again, the mason jar becomes the ideal vessel for healthy, tasty food.
