The next morning, Myka rolled over in bed and peered at the alarm clock through blurry eyes. It beeped annoyingly, and she silently cursed Olivia for suggesting their families get breakfast together. She turned off her alarm clock then stretched. Her body was sore, especially her neck. Her head pounded, and she wondered again what had happened in the library.
Myka looked around. Jilly and Barry were already up and dressed. “Morning, sweetheart,” Jilly said.
“Morning.”
“How are you feeling?” Barry asked.
“I’ve felt better,” she said, licking her dry lips. Barry and Jilly stared at each other and then back at Myka.
They had convinced her to stay with them in their hotel room so they could keep an eye on her overnight, not wanting her to faint again or suffer from a concussion. She was happy to leave the dorm because it meant she didn’t have to deal with Preston right away. Since he was mad, she’d packed a bag and left with Barry and Jilly. She wasn’t in the mood to deal with Preston’s mood swings. She felt guilty, too, but she wasn’t sure why she felt this way.
Myka grabbed her robe and walked into the bathroom. She started the shower, shed her pajamas, and stepped into the warm water. She closed the curtain and let the heat wash over her tense muscles. She peeled off the bandage, and as the water rushed over her wound, it burned. She touched it gingerly, and she thought of her shambled dreams about talking with Milo in the library.
She hurried through the rest of her shower, wrapped the warm, plush robe around her, and finished up in the bathroom. She opened the door and heard Barry and Jilly talking in hushed whispers. She couldn’t understand what they were saying, but she thought she heard them say something about her not being able to stay here when she turned eighteen. Surely she misunderstood. When they saw her, they faced her quickly, a soft pink blush forming on Jilly’s cheeks.
“Is everything okay?” Myka asked, her stomach tightening.
“Of course,” Jilly said. “Everything’s fine.” Jilly tried to give her a warm, comforting smile, but there was something off about it.
Barry turned his head away when Myka’s gaze wandered toward him. They had been talking about her, and she wanted to know what they were discussing. If they were hiding something from her or trying to decide what to do with her now that she’d had a strange episode in the library, she needed to know.
Pretending indifference, she grabbed her clothes and walked back into the bathroom. She dressed in a pair of black jeans and a blue t-shirt. They left, and while riding to the pancake house right off of Main Street in Crescent Hill, she applied her makeup. She dug around for a bandage in her purse and covered up the odd wound so no one could see it.
Barry parked the car next to the door, and Myka jumped out of the vehicle. She was happy to be away from the tension of Barry and Jilly staring at her in the rearview mirror.
