Lucifer was doing his best not to hover, but the devil watched her read without blinking once. It had been almost thirty minutes since the last time – when he’d asked if she was still hungry after heaping eggs, bacon, and hash on her plate like he was worried she might just die of starvation.

He’d used Doc’s recipe too, and she could tell he was worried that she was mad at him over the shit he’d bragged about the night before, but Jess was honestly just impressed he’d managed to sweet talk that cranky old man into giving him his cooking secrets.

Well, Lucifer certainly had that working in his favor. The only father she’d ever known really fucking liked him, and even if he was a stupid man sometimes, Jess didn’t think she could give him up.

Not when he was bending over backwards for her in every way.

But he also made that thing inside of her hungry.

It was embarrassing as hell, but he didn’t seem to be aware of the weird thing crawling around inside her veins, just that it was possible it could get out.

“Take a picture, it’ll last longer,” she muttered, turning the page without really reading it.

“You look better,” Lucifer said as he got up to take her empty plate. “The sleep must have helped.”

She’d woken up cranky though because his wings weren’t wrapped around her, just his magic. Apparently he’d wanted to know if she teleported in her sleep, but the magic had looked more complicated than that.

Maybe he was worried about something finding her that the charms couldn’t hide.

Tugging on her necklace, she watched him put together a charcuterie board, Luca and Morgan just as fascinated to watch the devil performing such domestic tasks.

He’d taken over when it came to food and cleaning since Mace was still outside with Eisheth – the greenhouse getting more and more complex as they bounced ideas off of each other.

The hellhound was still avoiding Luca, and he’d only come inside when Jess had woken up to give her the report from Hasani.

All the seals were safe and protected with no activity from the Hellfire Society.

The timing was suspicious considering she’d just met with the council, but Jess didn’t have the energy to investigate.

She needed to get the fucking obsidian out of her back and unlock those memories, but Lucifer had asked her to wait. Just a little longer, he’d pleaded.

He’d even sent the Angel of Death to speed things up.

Apparently, the issue wasn’t just how time passed in hell, but also making sure the lilim wouldn’t be discovered by any agents of heaven or enemies of Lilith.

Too bad she couldn’t stop time so she could learn exactly how hell worked and all the weird hierarchies. Jess had spent all her fucking life reading and learning, but she’d only had access to human knowledge.

It was a good thing she was a quick study.

“Lucifer…we just ate,” Morgan said, her tone gentle for once. “I promise we won’t starve if we don’t eat for a few hours.
