The next morning Ramón rose early. He had not slept well. The idea that Piña might be in league with the DEA had given him a restless night. They had a cast-iron agreement – at least he had thought so – with him trading from Bolivia and Piña taking over Medellín. There would have been a steady supply of coca paste to Medellín, each of them would have had separate trading regions in the States, and the money would have poured in. The call with the DEA had changed everything. Instinct told him that Angel Man was after the emeralds, and that incriminated Piña.

‘Puta!’

He went to find Pala.

An hour later Ramón was eating and talking in the dining room and Pala was standing by the table listening. ‘Hermano, arrange a flight to Guanay this afternoon,’ Ramón said. ‘I’ve some business to organise before we go to the altiplano.’

Pala had the good sense not to enquire about his timings and simply nodded. The radio valves had already been removed and he had packed for a trip; all that remained was to choose a sicario to run the compound. The operation would continue as normal, although none of the other sicarios would be allowed to leave and all communication would be through the man in temporary charge.

‘We’ll need to crack the riddle,’ Ramón continued. ‘Find out where Ernesto went on his business trips. We’ll go there first.’

‘He’s got a large collection of photos in an album,’ Pala replied. ‘We should check it for clues.’

Ramón’s suspicions were confirmed. Pala’s ‘thorough’ search had been derailed by photographs. It no longer mattered. He did not suppose for one moment that Ernesto would be so stupid as to have a photograph of the secret location. However, he humoured Pala.

‘Fine. Bring it. Did anything catch your eye?’ he asked, without much interest.

‘There’s a photo of him standing under a large rainbow outside an amusement park. I don’t think there was a sign, but there was a huge pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, you know, with coins spilling out and—’

‘Yes, yes. I get it,’ Ramón replied. ‘Bring the album. Find out where the park is. We’re going there.’
