Rabbi Baruch’s house is in a side street off the market. I had questions for him.

‘Samuel, a trader selling cheap baubles in the marketplace – do you know him, Rabbi?’

‘I know him, yes. Has he done something wrong?’

‘He’s a Jew? He keeps the Sabbath?’

‘He comes to shul.’

‘And what do you know about him?’

The rabbi went to his desk, opened a drawer and hunted through some documents before extracting one particular parchment. ‘Samuel lived in Hambrig Town for many years. Then he left, and now he has returned. This may tell you some of what you want to know.’

I unrolled the parchment and began to read.
