“Strange little poem isn’t it?” Mrs. Dottori said, as she began to tear again. “The strange thing is,” she went on, “that the plane was not raised from the sea floor for over a decade.”

That got Laura tearing again. “By which time,” she added between sniffles, “whatever evidence was left was useless.”

“I guess we’re going to Ustica,” I said to Ham. “The fourth story of the fourth day is a Decameron reference, and the story ends in…”

“Ustica. It’s a shame we don’t know what the fuck we are looking for. I understand it’s not easy to get to,” he said quietly to the window, not turning to look at me.

“We’re looking for a princess, Detective Turner. A Saracen Princess. How hard can that be?”

“Maybe you should tell Laura about the key, Paolo. Come entirely clean?” Ham whispered.

“Don’t know just yet,” I said. “She’s going to be surprised enough when I tell her we are going to Ustica with her.”

When Laura pulled herself together, we made our goodbyes quickly. It was sad leaving Mrs. Dottori. I didn’t think she would get another visitor for a while. She kissed all three of us on both cheeks, as if we were old friends. “Buona fortuna, regazzi.”

I was surprised to find Marco right at Mrs. Dottori’s door when I opened it and I must have looked it.

“I was just coming to get you,” he said. “There is a man watching the building. When I went toward him, he left abruptly. I did not see his face clearly. There’s a back entrance on Via dell’Anima. We’ll use that to leave.”

My estimation of Marco went up another notch. “No black Mercedes?” I said to him, walking alongside of him and down the steps. Laura and Turner were behind us.

“No, just a man making believe he was reading the International Herald Tribune on a bench out front. He’s been sneaking glances at the front door. Let’s not take chances,” Marco said, shepherding us down the narrow stairs and out the back entrance.
